AALCO will organize a side event on the topic “Enhancing International Cooperation in Combating Cyber Crime: An Asian-African Perspective” at the 9th Session of the Conference of the Parties to the UN Convention against Transnational Organized Crime (COP9 UNTOC) from 9:00 to 09:50 a.m., Thursday, 18 October 2018 in M6, M-Building, The Vienna International Centre, Vienna, Austria.
Harmonization of relevant laws, facilitation of international cooperation and formulation of a universal comprehensive code to combat cybercrime are three aspirations which the international community is presently striving to realize. The event seeks to take stock of the endeavours in enhancing international cooperation and the impediments faced in the process, especially in Asian-African regions. Methods to effectively overcome the hindrances by enhancing international cooperation shall be discussed.
The unprecedented proliferation of transnational cybercrimes in this globalized era poses serious harm to the national and international community. Realization has dawned on the international community that apart from existing legislations to combat cybercrime, international cooperation is sine qua non to effectively counter the perpetration of cybercrime. Realizing the importance of intergovernmental deliberations to enhance such cooperation, AALCO seeks to organize this event on the sidelines of COP9 UNTOC.
The programme of the event is as follows:
- Prof. Dr. Kennedy Gastorn, the Secretary-General of AALCO, will speak on “The Role and Achievements of AALCO in Promoting International Cooperation against Cybercrimes”;
- Amb. Dr. Namira Negm, Legal Counsel, African Union, will speak on the topic “The African Perspective on Enhancing International Cooperation in Combating Cybercrimes”;
- Mr. Jiang Su, Associate Professor, University of Beijing, People’s Republic of China, will speak on the topic “The Asian Perspective on Enhancing International Cooperation in Combating Cybercrimes”; and
- Ms. Kamola Ibragimova, Cybercrime Education Coordinator, United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) will speak on the topic “UNODC’s Practice in Assisting Asian-African Countries: Means and Methods to Enhance International Cooperation”.
AALCO would like to invite all delegates to the COP9 UNTOC, especially the delegates from the AALCO Member States, to attend the Side Event and join the Organization in its efforts to facilitate exchange of views and to promote cooperation in combating cybercrimes.
