Applications are now invited for the 5th Training Session of China-AALCO Exchange and Research Program on International Law (CAERP), which will be held from 29 July to 9 August 2019 in Beijing and from 10 to 16 August 2019 in Hong Kong, People’s Republic of China.
The establishment of CAERP was announced in mid-April 2015 by the Government of China during its hosting of the 54th Annual Session in Beijing. Fully funded by the Government of China and open to all Member States of AALCO, CAERP is designed as a long-term facility to support the further progress of AALCO and better fulfillment of the Organization’s objectives and missions in the new era. It aims to promote exchange and dialogue, share good practices, experience and knowledge, and enhance capacity-building in the field of international law among AALCO’s Member States. It also aims to support the work and activities of AALCO, through organizing and funding seminars and training sessions for officials and practitioners of Member States, facilitating research on major international law issues of common interest, and providing support to relevant working groups and expert meetings established by AALCO.
The 5th training session will focus on the theme of “Pacific Settlement of Disputes” which will cover the following topics during the session namely, Prohibition on the use of force or threat of force, Sanctions and Counter-Sanctions, WTO Reforms, Dispute Settlement Mechanisms and Procedures, Mediation, Recognition and Enforcement of Foreign Arbitral Awards, Dispute Settlement Mechanism under Belt and Road Initiative. The courses will be delivered in English and will be of both academic and practical value as world-renowned legal scholars and practitioners in various fields of international law. Additionally, the 5th session will also include visits to various government bodies of China.

The Government of China will cover training cost for the participants from developing economies (please refer Annex I for more detail). However, due to budget constraints, Member States are encouraged to cover expenses for the round-trip airfare for their nominated participants.
The AALCO Member States are cordially invited to recommend their officials in charge of foreign and legal affairs (each State can recommend one participant). The applicants are invited to apply by filling the Application Form (see attached and also available on http://china-aalco.mfa.gov.cn) and submit it by 15 May 2019 to the Chinese Embassies in their countries and the AALCO Secretariat respectively.
