Secretary-General’s Presentation at the 7th Biennial Conference of the Asian Society of International Law (AsianSIL), at Quezon City, Philippines, 22 August 2019

The Secretary General was invited to speak at the 7th Biennial Conference of the Asian Society of International Law at Quezon City, Philippines on 22nd August 2019. The topic of his presentation was ‘The Role of International Organizations at the time of Resurgent State Sovereignty’. In this presentation, the Secretary General expounded upon the role of International Organizations (IOs) as facilitators of progress and development in global governance endeavours aiding Member States to connect better with each other. The presentation addressed the historic role of AALCO as an IO facilitating the progressive development and codification of international law in diverse areas for Member States and noted the challenges facing IOs in the current times of resurgent State sovereignty.

Additionally, he was also invited by the De La Salle University, Taft Avenue, Manila, Philippines, on 23rd August 2019 to deliver a lecture on the topic: “State's Sovereignty Continues Regardless Effects of Sea-Level Rise: Trends in International Law from the Perspective of Asian and African Regions”. It was well received.
During his stay in Philippines, the Secretary General paid a courtesy visit to the Honourable Teodoro L. Locsin, Jr., Secretary, Department of Foreign Affairs as well as Honourable Menardo Guevarra, Secretary, Department of Justice. In both meetings, the Secretary General expressed his gratitude to the Government of the Philippines for re-joining AALCO and for its continued contribution to the progressive development of international law and its codifications. The visits to the Departments of Foreign Affairs, Department of Justice as well as at the De La Salle University were all facilitated by the Departments of Foreign Affairs of the Philippines.
