Ms. Anna Joubin-Bret, Secretary UNCITRAL delivered a Lecture on 14 September 2023 at AALCO Secretariat.
Ms. Bret was accompanied by Mr. Jae Sung Lee, Senior Legal Officer, UNCITRAL, Mr. Luca Castellani, Legal Officer, UNCITRAL, Ms. Athita Komindr, Head, UNCITRAL Regional Centre for Asia and the Pacific (UNCITRAL RCAP) and Ms. Tracy Choi, Legal Expert, UNCITRAL RCAP.
The lecture was attended by High Commissioners, Ambassadors, and Liaison Officers of the Member States of AALCO and students from Universities like Jawaharlal Nehru University, South Asian University, Delhi University and TERI School of Advanced Studies.
Ms. Bret explained the functioning of the Commission as the core legal body of the United Nations system in the field of international trade law. She highlighted the role of UNCITRAL in preparing and promoting the adoption of legislative and non-legislative instruments in many areas of trade laws.
Ms. Bret stated that the six Working Groups of UNCITRAL were engaged in the modernization and harmonization of rules on international business and international cooperation. She further delved into the topic of Investor-State Dispute Settlement Reform (ISDS) and explained in detail about the Commission’s work on this subject.
Ms. Bret encouraged AALCO Member States to actively participate in UNCITRAL’s Working Group discussions.
