AALCO's Participation in the United Nations Counter-Terrorism Committee (UNCTC) Special Meeting on “International Judicial and Law Enforcement Cooperation in Counter-Terrorism Matters pursuant to Security Council resolution 2322 (2016) and Other Relevant Council resolutions
On 20-21 June 2017, the UNCTC convened a special meeting at the United Nations Headquarters in New York with Member States, international, regional and subregional organizations, civil society, and the private sector. The focus of the meeting was on the provisions of Security Council resolution 2322 (2016) and the objectives of the meeting were to (i) raise awareness of Member States, international, regional and subregional organisations, and civil society on the requirements of the resolution; (ii) conduct dialogue and information-exchange on the main gaps and challenges encountered in implementing its provisions; (iii) to mobilise support for the implementation of the resolution; and (iv) to obtain updated information on international efforts to implement the resolution. The format of the meeting consisted of panel presentations by distinguished experts followed by a Question and Answer session and discussions by the participants consisting of representatives of the Member States and relevant organizations.
Dr. Roy S. Lee, AALCO’s Permanent Observer to the United Nations in New York, participated in the meetings and discussions, and submitted a report to the UN Counter-Terrorism Executive Directorate (CTED) on the work of AALCO pertaining to the topic of Violent Extremism and Terrorism (Legal Aspects), focusing particularly on AALCO Member States’ views on matters of judicial and international law enforcement cooperation, mutual legal assistance, and information-exchange, as well as the AALCO Secretariat’s responses to a questionnaire provided by the CTED.
